Amber Elliot is the designer behind Alderwood Studio, and she’s been sewing for as long as she can remember, starting when her grandmother handed her a needle, thread, and a pile of old clothes. As a kid, she loved “Frankenstein-ing” castoffs into new creations, and as a teenager she made her first quilt, a simple low-volume patchwork quilt, and was instantly hooked.

After quilting on and off for years and designing her own projects along the way, Amber finally wrote her first quilt pattern and discovered how much she truly loved designing. In January 2020, she launched Modern Makes, originally as a subscription box and now a digital membership with a thriving community of quilters. She also created the Pattern Writing Academy, helping other designers confidently write patterns, grow an audience, and build a quilting business they love.
